Preface

In nature, red-crowned cranes court partners for life through song and dance. Their actions symbolize loyalty and longevity.

In 2020, I married my soulmate Una during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2023, we held an in-person reception amongst friends and family.

Rooted in Japanese American culture, Una and I folded and arranged 1001 origami cranes into the Soyombo symbol - a national emblem of Mongolia.

Our cross-cultural celebration and passion for creating artwork together have inspired our second book -

the crane bows its head

This collection of poetry, pictures, and practices stimulates your senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.

Foreshadowing each exercise are haiku, illustrations, instructions, time and space to produce your own art, reflect and rekindle bonds with your past, present, and future selves.

May this anthology’s activities retrace your origins and how we can grow from them together.
